Medicinal plant extract promotes growth and immune response in European seabream

Aquaculture is facing several challenges in order to grow sustainably in the future. Bioactive compounds may represent a future solution to promote animal health and wellbeing in aquaculture practices. With the help of IRTA de Sant Carles de la Rápita, AQUA-FISHLAB from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Department of Cell Biology and Histology from Universidad de Murcia we researched and evaluated the effects of extracts from plants (L. citriodora and S. officinalis on functional fish feed). A nutritional tank trial with gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and the effect of the natural ingredient developed by Natac confirmed the positive effects of production parameters and immunomodulatory. This study shows how the use of phytochemical compounds represent a satisfactory and sustainable alternative for the aquaculture industry for the development of functional feeds that promote growth, resistance to diseases, and general welfare of the animal.
