Spain Food Valley

Target

To generate knowledge in order to design a new integrated, dynamic system that takes full advantage of the potential of biomass from the wine, avocado, nut, artichoke, and broccoli-producing industry chains.

  • Funding entity: Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism
  • Budget: 1.465.691€
  • Start date: April 2023
  • Duration: 28 months

Project Description

Natac takes part in the Spain Food Valley initiative, a cooperative tractor project, the objective of which focuses on the multi-sector improvement and transformation of the agri-food industry. This tractor project forms part of the Strategic Project for Economic Transformation and Recovery (Agri-food SPETR).

The main objective of the Primary Biodinam project is to transform agri-food biomass from the value chains, such as avocados, nuts, grapevines and vegetables such as artichokes and cardoons, into high-value ingredients for the food industry. This is achieved through the study of the phytochemicals of interest in each biomass and the development of innovative processes for their extraction.

In addition, the project researches the antioxidant benefits of these extracts, developed by Natac, in order to extend the shelf life of foods and explore their potential as functional ingredients that provide health benefits.

In addition to the Biodinam project, within Spain Food Valley, Natac forms part of ATENEA, a cross-cutting project aimed at developing a platform for the digital transformation of the industry. This project seeks to modernize the quality control and safety systems through the integration and analysis of data along the entire value chain, in order to address both common and specific needs in the different subsectors.

Activities carried out by Natac:

As project coordinator, Natac is focused on studying and characterizing the raw materials in order to identify the phytochemicals of interest and develop specific processes for obtaining them. These processes are integrated into the design of a dynamic, smart biorefinery that adapts to the condition of each raw material, maximizing its use and minimizing waste.
