Natac Biotech, a biotech company specialised in the sustainable production of botanical extracts and omega-3 oils, announces its participation in the European project OliWa. This ambitious initiative aims to valorize olive biomass through a circular economy model.
OliWa brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of 25 companies, universities, and research centres from six Mediterranean countries. Its main objective is to transform biomass from the olive industry into animal feed, functional additives, organic packaging, and biogas.
Natac will bring to the project its extensive experience in the extraction and standardisation of bioactive compounds present in olive biomass. Specifically, the extracts developed by the company from olive leaves and fruits are being evaluated in preclinical models to test their efficacy in the prevention of liver and kidney diseases. Their potential as promoters of intestinal and general health in animals is also being investigated.
As Esther de la Fuente, Natac’s scientific director, points out, “for us to participate in OliWa represents an opportunity to continue advancing in our mission to create value from underutilised natural resources through sustainable technological solutions. It also reinforces our commitment to the circular economy and zero waste”.
The OliWa project is funded by the PRIMA Programme under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and will run for 36 months, until June 2028.
